hello hello!

April 5, 2009

I’M BACK IN THE PHILIPPINES!! YAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!

To be honeset, I wasn’t expecting to be this happy. I was feeling nervous all the way on the plane because it was going to be another huge change, and God only knows how badly I did the second time that I moved here. Fortunately, those nerves turned out to be nausea, cause I felt much much better after threw up my chicken noodle soup on the plane. ^_^d I think the thing that I was most nervous about was my dog. We weren’t really sure how she’d cope spending that much time in the crate that she hated, so after the first five-hour flight to Vancouver, we checked her out and took her for a bit of a walk. She was highly agitated but that was to be expected since she absolutely despised her crate and she’d never ridden a plane before. Other than that she was perfectly fine and starved for both food and attention. It was the 14 hour flight to Manila from Vancouver that got my mother and I exchanging worried looks. Not only was I looking pale as a ghost and unable to walk properly due to nausea, I was really worried about how Yumi was doing. Apparently the cargo hold was temperature controlled but I wasn’t sure if it was heated or if they just made sure that it wasn’t as cold as it was outside. My mom even questioned the quality of their control over temperature when she found out that the outside temperature was in the range of the minus 30s (celsius). So when we arrived and we found the baggage claim, I made a beeline to the start of the conveyor belt where the luggage was coming out from. I waited there for about fifteen minutes and then all of a sudden the luggage coming out dwindled and eventually died. Anxiously, I stepped between the two people in fornt of me and peeked through the rubber flaps that the luggage was coming through. YES I WAS THAT NERVOUS XDDDD You would be too if you heard rumors about airport people stealing dogs! But more than that we were worried that by some unfortunate occurrence, Yumi died during the trip. I was about to demand an explanation from someone, but then a door behind me opened and Yumi’s crate was hurried out. Three old airport workers stood by and one of them casually asked if it was my dog while I ignored him and just opened her crate and let Yumi’s joyful reaction answer his question. As soon as she came out, there was a chorus of “How cute!!!” from surrounding airport people. XDDDDDD (I was slightly weirded out by the fact that he didn’t even ask for Yumi’s documents just to prove that I was the owner, so thankfully I got to her crate before anyone else did XDDDDD) With Yumi succesfully in tow we went out to meet my dad, brother and cousin who were waiting for us.

However, I was dismayed to find out that during the trip, my grandmother had died. She wasn’t actually my father’s mother, she was my father’s aunt but she was still my grandmother. The mourning period for her death wasn’t going to start til about 9pm and we got out at 7:30 so we went and got a bite of dinner before heading to the funeral parlour. When we got there, it was only my aunt and uncle in the room. We brought Yumi in in her doggy backpack so they didn’t notice her (we didn’t want to leave her in the stifling car). I put the bag down for a sec to greet them, but then Yumi started making her complaining sounds and they were surprised to find that there was a dog in the room. My aunt cackled and pointed out that no pets were allowed so we all ushered into the small blocked off eating space that had been provided and everyone bustled around Yumi there. After a couple of more people arrived, we prayed for a bit then we left for home. It felt kinda good being in the Philippines again. Despite the blatant poverty it felt weirdly good to be able to see the reality of the situation instead of just hearing about it from secondhand sources. So here I am in our little scungy house that I have to clean and do some laundry and keep an eye on my dog to make sure she adjusts to the heat properly. Sorry I haven’t been keeping up with y’all. ^_^ It’s been pretty hectic and whatnot. :P It’s good to be back. ^_^d

God Bless you Lola Seb. You were a hard-ass, chain-smoking, tobacco ash chewing woman of iron who loved yelling obscenities at teleserye villains. But you did everything for your grandchildren. We’ll miss you.

New York posts continued!

January 18, 2009

I realized that I totally forgot to continue my New York posts. XDDD So I will now continue them! And I’ll update the previous posts with pics. XDD

DAY 3!!!

I woke up late on Day 3, so we had a spam brunch and then headed out. We stopped by Bloomingdales first (which I now fondly call Bloomies XDDDD) and once again my aunt shopped madly for clothes for me to wear. FINALLY, I found something that I really liked! So my aunt happily bought me two awesome DKNY sweaters (don’t worry!! They were on super sale and were much cheaper than you are actually probly thinking!!!) and then we went to Saks Fifth where I found an awesome hoody and bought that too! Yay! Then it was around 6pm when my uncle called to say that their friend had called to say that they were picking us up from our apartment at 7pm to take us out to dinner. My aunt got a bit distressed when she then found out that my uncle wasn’t actually in the department store and was three blocks down at Best Buy. XDDDDD We waited for him to get back to us then together we dashed madly to the subway, hopped on the 6 and got to the apartment 15 minutes late!!! Only to find that our friends were stuck in traffic. XDDDD When they finally picked us up, it was revealed that we were going to a restaurant in Long Island. Because it was a long way away, we happily chatted and joked in the car. Then one of our friends says, “I should’ve brought my son…”

Aunt M. (Mai-chan’s aunt): Yeah! You should’ve brought him along! We can’t pick him up on the way?

Friend: Noooo, he’s working tonight. Mai, how old are you?

Mai: (totally mystified as to how her age was related to the topic of conversation) Uhhh 22…O_o

Friend: Ohhhh, we could’ve paired you up…

Friend’s girlfriend: What are you saying! She probably has a boyfriend!!!

Friend: Well, do you????

Mai: (His name is Aiba!) Nope.

Aunt M. : Doesn’t your son have a girlfriend??

Friend: Nope! Oh what a wasted chance…-_-;;

Aunt M.: Awww, and your son is so nice too…Mai, he’s so funny!

Mai: Uhhh…okay.

Friend: The next time you come to New York, you guys can meet. It might be fate!

Mai: O_o

XDDDDDD It was so weird. XDDDD That was the second time that week where a family friend had tried to hook me up to one of their sons and then mentioned that it might’ve been fate! XDDDDDD I think it was fate that I didn’t meet them. XDDDD Anyhoo….

We end up at this restaurant called Minado’s. Which just happens to be a Japanese buffet. *Mai dances around in happiness*

I got to eat this lovely food:

UMAI YO!

Of course, the company was similarly awesome:

And randomly, there was an Asian dude who looked hot from afar XDDDD

Asian dude who looks kinda hot

But then he looked in my direction and I just…looked away. XDDDD

And thus… Day 3 ended. I was exhausted. Running across New York is definitely fun but inevitably tiring. XDDDD

KYAAAAAAAAAASDKJNASKJDCNLAKSJDFHLWIUEHF *DYINGDIESDEAD*

January 11, 2009

SO YEAH.

While I was coming back form some Sunday shopping with my family, we were in the car and I was listening to Boku Ga Boku No Subete. And then my brother was saying something so I paused it to listen to him but then I ended up listening to the radio, which was Rick D’s Weekly Top 40. Rick D happened to be talking about global number one’s and this is what I hear…
“And from New Zealand, at number one we have Lady Gaga…Poker Face!”
*plays chorus*
“And from Japan…”
*Mai ignores brother and starts listening to radio wondering what American music Japanese people like*
“…the number one hit is by a group called Arashi…”
*Mai goes into shock*
*Beautiful Days starts playing*
*Mai starts flailing and then singing loudly along*
*chorus finishes*
“And that was Beautiful Days! By ARRRRRASHI”
*Mai continues singing the rest of the chorus and bridge*

XDDDDDDDDDDDD
BUT YEAH!!! I WAS FLAILING IN THE CAR ALL BY MYSELF WHILE MY AUNT AND MOM JUST SAT IN THE BACK NOT SAYING ANYTHING AND MY BROTHER HAD THIS LOOK ON HIS FACE THAT SAID “YOU-MAY-BE-RIDING-IN-THE-CAR-THAT-I’M-DRIVING-BUT-I-DON’T-ACTUALLY-KNOW-YOU (ANYMORE)” XDDDDDDDDDDDD
AND THEN I GOT HOME AND I RAN UPSTAIRS TO TELL MY FRIEND BECKY AND THE TIME IS NOW 3:29 PM SO I’VE BEEN FLAILING NON-STOP FOR ABOUT AN HOURRRRRR.
I NEVER THOUGHT I’D HEAR AN ARASHI SONG ON NORTH AMERICAN RADIO (it’s not as if they’re looking to do an international release any time soon or ever XDDDDD) I’M SO SERIOUSLY PSYCHHDDDDDDDDDDDDDD KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

K NOW I HAVE TO GO AND TELL EVERYONE I KNOW. JA NE!

Day 2! – Central Park, Strawberry Fields, Sephora, KINOKUNIYA(!!!) and getting lost at Macy’s

December 30, 2008

(This post will be updated with pics later on. I am currently too sleepy to wait for them to upload now)

Time is now 1:29A.M.

My aunt woke me up this morning at 10 am. XDDD CLEARLY I was exhausted from all that waiting on the plane XDDDD. Anyhooo, we made our way out of the apartment by around 11am and walked a few blocks down 61st St. to have breakfast at Dunkin Donuts of all places. Then we kept walking down to 71st to find the Frick Museum only to find that it was closed on Monday’s. :| Then we were going to head down to the Met only to be informed by another disappointed tourist that that was ALSO closed on Mondays. So we skipped the whole museum idea and headed straight for Central Park which was thankfully right across the road from the Frick building. Central Park is HUGE so as much as I wanted to go, I wasn’t able to go and take pictures of the gazebo where Aiba and Maia met in my fic. T_T Anyhoo we made our way through Central Park, taking kajillions of photos as we went until we made it Strawberry Fields, the part of the park dedicated to the legendary John Lennon. I wanted to take a pic of myself (like Makino XP) but there was dozens of people standing there and littering the place while ignoring the QUIET SPACE sign. DDDD:

dsc_05691

Then from Central Park we hopped onto a bus and went on down to Columbus Circle where we ate lunch and did a bit of shopping.

And then, because I had been paying attention to the map I’d been given, I quite literally DRAGGED my aunt and uncle down Central Park South and then down the Avenue of the Americas where I knew Kinokuniya was. XDDDDD
Along the way we were besieged by giant Christmas decorations, hordes of crowds, hundreds of irate taxi drivers and random muppet characters idling for money.

Giant Christmas Balls

More gigantic Christmas balls

Gigantic Christmas Lights

Elmo!

Shrek??

Bugs bunny?!

Winnie the pooh!

Cookie!

And then just when I thought I had to walk a few more blocks to find it, a simple sign suddenly materialized before my very eyes and caused a greater excitement than what it’s non-descript appearance led me to imagine: KINOKUNIYA.
I hopped into the store and found it teeming with people, and little hafu children running around squealing in Japanese and then I found a magazine rack in a corner and was severely disappointed to see that it was only filled with cosplay and fashion magazines (although the ageha mags tickled me pink XDDDD) and so I aimlessly wandered around purposely hoping that something would catch my eye for me to purchase. And then I passed by a bookshelf and LO AND BEHOLD. WAS A WALLFUL OF SHELVES DEDICATED TO IDOL MAGS.
A circle of mags near the floor held the key to my dreams…AROUND SIX DIFFERENT MAGAZINES WITH ARASHI ADORNING THEIR COVERS. Propping the magazines up next to them, neatly shelved were copies of ARASHI IS ALIVE and another paparazzi book. but ZOMGGGGGG I QUITE LITERALLY AKSDJKASJCDK;AJSDFHK;ASJDNF;AKSDJGFH AT THAT POINT. And just when I was about to buy a GQ Japan magazine because it had MatsuJun on the cover as one of their Men of the Year and it was the only Arashi related thing I could find!!!!!!!!! I ended up blowing USD55.00 today. :-< On two Potato mags and Arashi is Alive! XDDDDDD One of the Potato mags was an Arashi cover and the other one was a HeiSei cover which I bought for my cousin in Australia who luffs them. Anyhoo, I wanted to look around more especially since there was a cd section downstairs but I was a bit pressed for time and the line was insanely long so I paid and said “Arigatou.” to the white dude at the counter. Emphasis on the “white”, because he replied with “Arigatou gozaimashita!^_^ Hai~ douzo!*beckons to next customer to come over” XDDDDDD (Am I the only one disconcerted by non-Asians speaking Japanese outside of Japan ??? XDDD)

So! After Kinokuniya, I was all set to end my day with dinner and flailing but of course I knew that that was not what I was destined to do this evening. We ended up at Macy’s where we shopped and shopped for like four hours and I found NOTHING that I wanted to buy eeven though my aunt was clearly getting impatient with me because she REALLY wanted me to get new clothes.XDDD So she was basically pulling things off the shelf and telling me to try them on XDDDDD most of which I didn’t necessarily like. XDDDD And then of course, I came out of the fittimg rooms and she was nowhere to be found. I tried calling her phone only to realize that I was out of prepaid and I could not call her nor could she contact me. I walked around the floor two or three times and when all was lost, I walked up to a lady and asked her to give me change for a dollar bill so I could use a payphone. Then I called her and she shouted at me and then we met up and she shouted at me some more (even though it wasn’t really my fault XDDDD) but it was okay, she was just really upset and afraid that something had happened to me. She actually said that she was scared that I might’ve been kidnapped. PUH-LEASE. As if I’m small enough to be whisked away by a random stranger in a mall! XDDDDDD And thus my day ended with dinner after shopping at Macy’s (I ended up buying a cute new bag), a trip home on the subway and some late night shopping for tomorrow’s breakfast food at the local grocery store.
The time is now 1:54am. I apologize for my rambly and sometimes incoherent tales but I hope you enjoy them anyway. Til tomorrow then? In the meantime, I will keep myself awake with this lovely pile of purchases:

FLAILING FTW!!!

Ja ne! *waves*

Day 1 – MacDonald-Cartier International Airport, Ottawa, Canada

December 29, 2008

3:55pm

Halloooooo~~
I am currently at Ottawa Airport waiting for my flight to New York which has been delayed by an hour and a half. T_T I don’t know what to do!!! Although I’m awfully excited to be traveling by myself (I was fangirling for no reason while waiting in the baggage check line XDDDD) and then I had to get my documents checked by the customs official and I was so scared because I didn’t know the address OR the name of the person with whom I was staying XDDDDD. The lady questioning me was seriously KOWAI! T____T But I managed to get through it by saying that we were staying at an apartment owned by my aunt’s friend. It sounds sketchy but it’s true :p. But seriously, I’ve been so excited for this trip that I didn’t know what to do with myself XDDDDD Last night I was checking my packed bags and re-checking them and checking my documents and the weather where I was going to and then checking it all over again that I ended up sleeping at 2am even though I was ready for bed at 9. XDDDD Then my brother came home from a party at around 3am and that woke me up. Then my dad came home at around 4am from a different party and that also woke me up. And then after that I couldn’t get back to sleep and ended up falling asleep at 7am. XDDDDD Can you tell I was excited???? XDDDDDDDDD So then we went to a 12pm mass and then we got to the airport at around 2pm and ate lunch together and then I checked in and everything and here I am. It is 4:04 pm and it says that my flight to Newark has been delayed to 7pm. T_T Nandeeeeeeee~
So since I’m not doing anything I might as well start ranting about what has happened since my last blog post (which was ages ago).
My exams started on December 9, I had one exam that day and it went so much better than I had originally expected. The next day though was HORRIBLE.
I had TWO of the hardest exams and on that day it just so happened that all the buses went on strike (!!!) and a snowstorm arrived at the same time!!! So besides being buried under several feet of snow, my only mode of transportation was not available. Our car was at the mechanics getting fixed and wouldn’t be available for another couple of days. So I tried calling several taxi companies but to no avail: some of the companies had busy lines while the two that picked up didn’t have taxis available until 12:30pm. Take note! I was calling at SEVEN IN THE MORNING. ARGH. And my first exam was at 9:30!!! Thankfully, I managed to find a friend with a car who could drive me. He was supposed to be at my house by 8:30 but he arrived at 9:30 because apparently even the highways had not yet been ploughed and it was tough getting through all the snow. So I eventually managed to get to my exam an hour late and my professor took pity on me and still let me take it. My second exam that day was horribly hard and I’m pretty sure I failed it. I got home later in the evening feeling exhausted and horrible. Blargh.

I stayed home the next few days because the only way I could get around was by taxi and I didn’t want to waste money on that. Needless to say, my two other exams went by in a stellar fashion. My last exam was in Japanese and it was held in the evening. I hitched a ride with my mom on her way to work so I arrived at around 9am so I spent the whole day studying for Jap which was at 7pm. Luckily since I had my laptop with me, the school internet was super fast and I managed to download TWELVE arashi vids. XDDDDD I got like five subbed eps of AnS, three subbed eps of HnA and other miscellaneous clips and shows. I watched some of them just for listening practice XP (lies!).

After my Jap exam on the 19th I was officially done for this semester!!! I was relieved but also kind of apprehensive at the same time because I wasn’t sure about my grades. At this moment I’m still not sure but at the same time I’m not that nervous anymore. :P
Christmas came and went, it was a lot of fun. I won’t elaborate on it because it basically went by in a lovely whirl of merry noise, turkey, ham, ribbons and gift-wrapping, eggnog, hugs and Filipino carols. Needless to say, I haven’t been getting much sleep lately and I don’t expect to get a good nights sleep until January 7 when everything’s settled down. :P
That was a basic summary of the happenings since my last post. The time is now 4:34pm and I still have around two hours to go before we start boarding. I think I will stop for now and return later if I get bored again.
And don’t worry. Don’t think that I’ve totally forgotten about the fact that I did nothing for Aiba’s birthday!!! That will soon be rectified.

Ja ne!

6:53pm.

So at 6:10 it was announced that we would start boarding passengers for the flight. Happily I lined up and was like the third person on the plane and now we are parked in the middle of the runway waiting for someone in Newark to give us the all-clear. Dear god am I bored. T____T

Remnants…

November 28, 2008

It feels like it’s been my birthday all month!

Thanks to all the friendly-friends who I’ve been hanging out with practically every weekend!

dsc_1341

XP

Now that November is coming to a close and final exams are about to begin, I realize that there are a lot more things that will be ending.

My last semester at the University at Ottawa will be finished by next Wednesday.

I will no longer be coming to school here next year.

In the last few classes that I have, I’ve become very appreciative of what I know I won’t have when I go back to the Philippines.

I’ve blown a lot of chances that have come my way.

I’ve learned my lesson.

This November also ends my chance-wasting.

Let this be an auspicious beginning for my twenty-third year!

今年もよろしくお願いします!!!
